After 30 years of
a successful retail and manufacturing businesses in Ghana, Melcom Group Ghana
plans to add two new business lines to its existing range of businesses.
The two new
business lines are microfinance and food manufacturing and packaging, the
Chairman of Melcom Group, Bhagwan Khubchandani disclosed at the launch of its
30th anniversary, last week, in Accra.
Currently, the
Melcom Group of Companies consists of six separate entities: Melcom Limited,
Century Industries Limited, Crownstar Electronic Industries Limited, Melcom
Hospitality, Melcom Travel & Tours Limited, and Melcom Care. Apart from
capturing an extensive retail market share with a network of 41 Melcom retail
outlets and 3 Cash 'n Carry stores spread all over Ghana, the Group is
well-diversified into other businesses and gain popularity for their quality
and affordability.
These will add to
the already range of businesses; Melcom retail, Melcom Travel and Tour, Century
plastics manufacturing, Melcom bakery and Crown Star electronics.
"The future
looks bright for Melcom, we have a number of businesses we are conducting
market and product research on and soon we will be announcing to the general
public our new line of businesses to add to the Group", Mr Ramesh
Sadhwani, Group Managing Director told Economy Times in an interview.
Mr. Sadhwani
shared his good and bad experience he has encountered with Ghanaians for his
number of years in Ghana. Despite Ghanaians being loyal and eager to learn and
improve on themselves in developing a career path, majority are indiscipline
and lack integrity, he said.
“Attitudes have to
change; weak integrity among Ghanaians is a national issue.”
Another major
concern he encounters in line of developing their business is the challenge of
“finding employees with right skills set for the retail business in Ghana.”
This is due to the fact that, there are no specialized schools or training
institutions that teaches skills in retailing and the curriculums of the
tertiary institutions do not consider topics or courses on retailing
enterprises.
“From a humble yet
ambitious set up in a single Melcom shop in 1989, Melcom has transformed into a
Group of Companies operating subsidiaries that are relevant to Ghana's
development process,” the Director of Communication of Melcom Group, Godwin
Avenorgbo remarked at the launching ceremony, in Accra.
